Long Time No Post

Sorry for the absence lately. I will try and turn over a new leaf starting Jan. 1st!!! I want to post at LEAST once a day. That's my goal anyway. *s*

Going to the Oilers game tonight. Hopefully we will be kicking some serious Senator's ass!!! If not...I hope it's at least entertaining. Our seats are on the very last row...no one behind us...as high as you can get. Nothing but the best I tell ya. lol Nah...everybody knows the action is always happening in the nose bleed sections!!!

It's Sunday

'That means it's football time...NFL style. *s* I actually did catch some CFL football playoff action yesterday. Sadly both teams I was routing for lost. I am hoping my Seahawks can give me an entertaining game. The season is a right off but I would still love to see them snatch some wins. It will be another tough one against Arizona though.

I didn't really watch the Oilers game last night but I see after checking the scores they lost in a shootout. Talk about another disappointing season for my team. *shrug* I guess there is always next year.

I have been alone at the bottom of my hockey pool until now. Chad has decided to show some pity and come visit me. Of course, the season is just underway and lots can happen but I would rather not be at this end of the scale.

Edmonton Oilers

They unveiled their new 3rd jersey for this year. I love it because it's a throw back to days of ol'. You know...the good old days when we actually had a competitive team in this league. *s* I would like to get a new "retro" jersey but with the price of them nowadays well, that remains to be seen. The Oilers will wear the new one 14 times this season. Too bad it can't be more. I'm not really a big fan with the Reebok jerseys the NHL went with recently. Ours look a little too much like a boring practice jersey.

Hockey Pool

We had our Hockey Draft yesterday at Boston Pizza. This is the team I ended up with. I'm not overly pleased with the results but it will still be fun to keep an eye on things as the season progresses. Of course, I may have to make a few key trades but for now I want to keep those for injuries just in case.

Adding to HNIC Theme Song

Ok, in my last post I was a wee bit disillusioned. I THOUGHT we would still be hearing the theme song on Hockey Night in Canada but sadly, that is not the case. They lost the rights to the song today. TSN will use the song when they air hockey games on their station but HNIC will have to come up with a new diddy. I just heard one guy on the news say we should use "The Good Ol' Hockey Game" by Stompin' Tom Conners. Perhaps...but truly...how could you ever replace this song? We might as well just have a picture with no sound and let us Canadians hum it ourselves.

HNIC Theme Song

It's over. As reported on TSN, CTV acquires exclusive rights to the Hockey Night in Canada theme.

Thank goodness all this nonsense is done with. It's a relief to know that we'll be listening to the opening song for many years to come. When it comes right down to it...everything has a price and finally...someone saw that and it's finished.

There are some things in this life that should just never be tampered with. This is one of them...along with breathing...and original Kraft Dinner.

2008 Stanley Cup Champions

Hats off to the Detroit Red Wings for winning that all elusive trophy. They completely dominated this series and proved to be true champions. There is no question the team they put on the ice this year was extremely talented. Congrats to all of their fans. I know one in particular...hey Mark...have fun but don't party too hard!!! *s*

Just wait till next year though...Go OILERS!!!

Hockey

Just finished watching 6 periods of hockey to decide a winner. *whew* The Pittsburgh Penguins live to fight another day! They sure got outplayed pretty much the entire game but at the end of the day it really doesn't matter but the final score. Wednesday's game may be a yawner after this one but you can bet I'll be watching. Go Penguins! It's slim...but hey...dare to dream. *s*

Hockey Pool

I came in second place in our Hockey Pool and made a cool fifty dollars tonight. Now a bunch of us just spent 3 hours at Boston Pizza picking 10 players for our Playoff Pool!!! It sure can be time consuming but the visiting was especially nice when you don't see each other too often these days. We'll see how I fare this time around with the players I picked. It's really like going to Las Vegas and rolling them big boy dice! Good Luck everyone!

Hockey = Hoarse

Red and I went to the Oilers afternoon game. Wow, what an awesome game to be at. Seemed like a playoff game, the place was electric. I thought we may lose it after the game was tied by Colorado after coming back from a 3 goad deficit. Somehow we managed to come out of it with a win. The crowd was sure on Ryan Smyth though. Every time he touched the puck you could here a ton of boo's being shouted out. On the other hand though, Dwayne was getting full support of the crowd today. Every time he made a decent play people continued it with a cheer of "Roly Roly Roly". This all started with him having a pushing match with Ryan after a whistle. Red and I both have very sore throats from cheering through the whole game. My voice is now 3 levels lower than usual. *s*

The Oilers are 3 points out of a playoff spot with six games to go now. We have another game with Colorado (whom we're chasing) so it should be a very interesting finish to the season. I didn't expect them to make the playoffs this year. I actually said that in October but it sure is nice to be able to give the fans something to get excited about. It's been one of those disappointing years for us again.

Bobby Orr

Today is Bobby Orr's 60th Birthday. He was born in Parry Sound, Ontario. He was signed by The Bruins when he was 12 years old if you can believe that. Played with the Oshawa Generals in the Junior League when he was 14. Due to NHL rules he had to stay in this league until he was 18. Bobby played for The Boston Bruins until he was traded to The Chicago Blackhawks in 1976 where he only played 26 games over three seasons due to injuries.

The only players in league history scoring more points per game than Orr are Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe and Mike Bossy.

Records:

• Most points in one NHL season by a defenseman (139; 1970-71).
• Most assists in one NHL season by a defenseman (102; 1970-71).
• Highest plus/minus in one NHL season (+124; 1970-71).
• Tied for most assists in one NHL game by a defenseman (6; tied with Babe Pratt, Pat Stapleton, Ron Stackhouse, Paul Coffey and Gary Suter).
• Held record for most assists in one NHL season from 1971 to 1981 (102; broken by Wayne Gretzky and also bettered by Mario Lemieux), this is still a record for a defenseman.

I'm a huge Edmonton Oilers fan and was lucky enough to witness one of hockey's greatest players at a few games. Wayne Gretzky. A true ambassador to the game on and off the ice! Red and I are lucky enough to own not one but TWO of his rookie cards! We proudly display a replica version of his card on our computer desks. The real ones are in safe keeping. As of today the cards are worth approximately 500-700 dollars.

13 years, $124 million

Now that's what I call a jackpot!

Alex Ovechkin signed a $124 million, 13-year contract extension Thursday with the Washington Capitals. This is the first US$100 million deal in NHL history but not the longest. Rick Dipietro signed a 15 year deal with the New York Islanders.

Is it just me...or does it seem like our entertainers (movie stars, athletes) salary's have skyrocketed in the past decade while the general public's salaries grow at a snail's pace?

I need to go buy a 6/49 ticket.
